So you have a site or blog up and traffic is on your mind. Please take note that traffic will not just go crazy the first month. Traffic takes some time and work. There are many SEOs "Search Engine Optimizations" out there that want you to pay to get traffic. Most of these are unsuccessful and are the wrong way to go, especially since you are trying to make money and not spend it.
Now with that being said, I have a few tips that may help you out. Content and keywords are a big part of traffic. Let's say you have just a 1 page site. Google and other search engines are just going to feed off the content on that 1 page. This is going to decrease your chance of having people find your website. So how do you fix that? Make LOTS of content and lots of pages. The more you have, the more different types of searches and keywords will lead to your site.
Submitting to search engines and directories is a great way to get your site listed. Some of these include Yahoo, MSN, Google, Altavista, AOL, Alexa, etc. There are tons of search engines you can submit to. Just do your research and start submitting. Submitting to multiple engines helps because not everyone uses the same one. Plus this may help on your page ranking, which I will explain later.
Using your community is a great way to help traffic. By community I mean online forums, groups, etc that relate to your themed site. Use your website in your signature in your posts so it will get peoples attention.
Trading links is another great way to help get traffic. If you know of some sites that would put your website link on theirs, then go for it.
Advertisements helps increase traffic but will cost you money. Google has a great program setup called AdWords. You can basically make your ad, choose a monthly budget, choose keywords related to your site, and then have your ad shown on Google when people search. I will go into further detail on this later.
TIME, TIME, and TIME. If you are patient and the site is done right, traffic will increase in time.
These are just a few ways to help with traffic. Always do your research and look for new ways.
