One of the biggest mistakes that I see people making whenever they first come on the Internet and try to establish an Internet presence is that they are attempting to be everything to everyone. There is a very important fact that you need to be aware of whatever you're trying to pull traffic into your website. The Internet is not Wal-Mart, they are two separate things and the type of marketing that is done in a large department store is not the type of marketing that you are going to be doing on your website. Here is an example.
If you were to go into a department store and you are looking for something specific, perhaps a CD of your favorite band, you would have to walk through the store in order to get to the CD area. Along the way, you may see a shirt that catches your attention and you stop to pick it up. Since you purchased a new shirt, you want to purchase some pants and a hat that will match. You simply pick them up and throw them in the shopping cart, along with some socks as well. After you pick up the CD, you stop on your way back through and purchase some small items at the grocery department. While standing in line, you pick up some razors and a pack of batteries. All this is done, simply because you wanted a CD.
The Internet, however, works quite differently. If somebody is looking for a CD on the Internet, they go to their favorite search engine and type in the name of the CD that they are looking for. They follow one the links and land on a webpage that helpfully offers the CD and they purchase it. The only other option that they really have is to back out of your website in order to find a better deal. They are not going to look on your website for anything else that you may have for sale and you cannot cross sell something that is not related to the CD.
If you build your website and concentrate on a single niche, you're going to see a lot more traffic that is targeted and a lot more sales as a result. Not only are you going to be able to sell to this traffic because you are offering what they are looking for, you will be able to sell them related items after the purchase while they still have their credit card in their hand.
Once you understand this fundamental fact of getting traffic to your webpage, the sky is really going to be the limit as far as how far you are able to take it. Continue to build your web presence that is surrounding specific niches and you will see your traffic grow and continue to grow over the course of time. Look for ways to make more out of your existing traffic and never stop looking for avenues of growing your traffic. You will see your business grow right along with those numbers.
